Overview

The Strategic Diversity and Inclusion Framework was adopted by the UNW Board of Trustees in September 2018.  The Strategic Diversity and Inclusion Framework, including implementing identified tactics to achieve 2018-2019 goals is a strategic goal of the University of Northwestern Strategic Plan.  Goals and tasks for 2018-2019 included those listed below. 


Develop and Implement a plan to increase Global Diversity and Inclusion Benchmarks (GDIB) scores in the area of the Foundation Group (Categories 1, 2, and 3: Vision, Leadership, and Structure) moving toward scores of Levels 4 and 5 (Progressive and Best Practices). 

  • Examine Levels 3, 4, and 5 descriptors of the GDIB 
  • Prepare a survey to gather data/ideas from campus leaders (SLT, Deans, Chairs, Directors) related to Levels 4 and 5 
  • Sort data and identify themes 
  • Share findings with campus leaders 
  • Identify short and long-term measurable goals related to findings using input from campus leaders 
  • Identify strategies aligned to short-term goals 
  • Implement strategies 
  • Measure outcomes of implemented strategies
     

 Develop and implement a plan to use the Intercultural Development Inventory (IDI) as a tool to increase cultural competence.   

  • Select 15-20 key leadership staff with representation from each VP area to take the IDI 
    • Engage in 60 mn 1:1 follow-up to construct the Individual Development Plan (IDP) 
    • Participate in two workshops—The Hidden Brain and Unconscious Bias and Leading in Multi-Cultural Environments ($250/person, $1500/workshop) 
  • Engage in discussion/reflection as to application within each VP area 
  • Use the IDI and the follow-up IDP with employees in each VP area 

Increase Northwestern’s understanding of the perspectives of non-white GDIB respondents, developing and implementing a plan to address their responses.    

  • Develop interview questions for one-one interviews and or focus groups for employees  
  • Develop interview questions for one-one interviews and or focus groups for students 
  • Invite participants to interviews and or focus groups 
  • Complete interviews and or focus group discussions 
  • Compile results for employees 
  • Compile results for students 
  • Sort data and identify themes 
  • Report findings to the University community 
  • Identify short and long-term measurable goals related to findings using input from campus leaders 
  • Identify strategies aligned to short-term goals 
  • Implement strategies 
  • Measure outcomes of implemented strategies 


Broaden Northwestern’s understanding and ownership of the Strategic Diversity and Inclusion Framework within each VP area.  

  • Share GDIB results and discuss the Strategic Diversity and Inclusion Framework with each VP area 
  • Prepare and share a reflection document for use within each VP area to examine GDIB categories (beginning with 1, 2, and 3, followed by categories that are most relevant to the work in the VP area 
  • Identify roadblocks that may be preventing movement to GDIB levels 4 and 5 in GDIB categories 1, 2, and 3 
  • Identify roadblocks that may be preventing attainment of Strategic Diversity and Inclusion Framework Directives 1-5 
  • Identify short and long-term measurable goals related to findings using input from campus leaders 
  • Identify strategies aligned to short-term goals 
  • Implement strategies 
  • Measure outcomes of implemented strategies  

Plan and facilitate a campus-wide prayer and reconciliation event.  

  • Invite campus employees to participate in prayer 
  • Establish a prayer team to seek wisdom, direction and timing  
  • Develop a detailed plan 
  • Schedule and host the event (September 19, 2019, Nazareth Hall Chapel)

 Develop a funding model for the Strategic Diversity and Inclusion Framework leading to support of outcomes and related tasks. 

  • Identify financial resources needed to accomplish each goal 
  • Roll financial needs into an overall plan and determine funding source(s) 


Clarify the role of the Global Initiatives Council to ensure ongoing engagement with the University of Northwestern Strategic Diversity and inclusion Framework Strategic Goal.   

  • Identify points of intersection 
  • Identify ways the Global Initiatives Council can support and forward the work of the Project Charter
